Safe Sport Requirements

Squash BC joins other sport groups across the country in our commitment to creating a sport environment that is accessible, inclusive, respectful of a participant’s personal goals, and is free from all forms of maltreatment. As part of this commitment, Squash BC requires certain groups within our community complete various Safe Sport education courses and certifications.

The required courses are summarized in the following table. Please note that unless otherwise specified, the courses are required to be completed by March 31, 2022 in order for an individual to continue in the specified role at a Squash BC program or event. Instructions on how to complete the courses are located at the bottom of this page.

Squash BC Safe Sport Requirements

*Coaches must at least be registered for a Make Ethical Decisions course by the time their program begins.

Role Definitions

Coaches & Program Leaders

  • Lead Coaches: Anyone leading the delivery of a Squash BC program. Examples of Squash BC programs are: Roving Ambassador Program, High Performance Program, Post- Secondary Program, etc.
  • Assistant Coaches: Anyone assisting with the delivery of a Squash BC program. Examples of Squash BC programs are: Roving Ambassador Program, High Performance Program, Post-Secondary Program, etc.

Tournament Directors & Officials

  • Junior Tournament Safe Sport Representative: The Tournament Director or Designated Safe Sport Representative for any Squash BC-sanctioned event with participants aged 18 and under.
  • Tournament Referee: The designated Tournament Referee or Head Referee for any Squash BC-sanctioned event.
  • Officials: Any official contracted by Squash BC to referee at any Squash BC-sanctioned event.

Squash BC Staff & Volunteers

  • Staff Member: Any staff member paid to work in the Squash BC office.
  • Board Member: Any Director serving on the Squash BC Board
  • Committee Member: Any volunteer serving on a Squash BC Committee or Task Force

Parents

  • HP Parent: For each athlete named to a Squash BC High Performance Program/Team, at least one parent must meet the requirements.

SAFE SPORT TRAINING (CAC)

Price: Free

Safe, inclusive sport environments help make sport rewarding and enriching for all. By completing Safe Sport Training you will gain the knowledge and skills to create healthy and safe environments by recognizing, addressing and preventing maltreatment in sport.

COMMIT TO KIDS

Price: $12+GST

Commit to Kids (C2K) is a program of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection. It is a step-by-step program that helps child-serving organizations create safe environments for the kids in their care. C2K gives organizations the tools to create policies, procedures and employee codes of conduct to reduce the risk of child sexual abuse and create safe environments for children and youth in their care.

MAKING HEAD WAY IN SPORT (CONCUSSION AWARENESS)

Price: Free

NCCP Making Head Way in Sport is the NCCP’s free, online answer to the prevalence and ambiguity of concussions in sport. Parents, coaches, and athletes all benefit from knowing as much as possible about concussions; this online learning tool is designed to help coaches gain the knowledge and skills required to ensure the safety of their athletes.

MAKE ETHICAL DECISIONS

Price: Varies

The module equips coaches to handle challenging ethical situations with confidence and surety. It helps coaches identify the legal, ethical, and moral implications of difficult situations that present themselves in team and individual sports.

Registration Instructions:

  1. Reach out to sportdevelopment@squashbc.com to find out when Squash BC’s next MED course is scheduled for. We aim to run 2-4 MED courses per calendar year. Coaches are also welcome to take the MED from another NCCP course provider.

RESPECT IN SPORT FOR PARENTS

Price: $12+GST

The program will help define a standard of behaviour for all parents and create a more rewarding, safe and respectful environment for everyone involved. Parents want to do a great job supporting their kids. Respect in Sport provides parents with the tools to create and maintain Safe Sport environments.

BACKGROUND AND CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS

Squash BC accepts Background and Criminal Record Checks completed within the past three years. If you need to complete a Background Check, Criminal Record Check, and/or Vulnerable Sector Check as part of your Squash BC requirements, please reach out to sportdevelopment@squashbc.com for further instructions.

Squash BC Coaches – Program Requirements

Lead and Assistant Coach course requirements apply to coaches working in that capacity for any program managed by Squash BC, such as the Roving Ambassador Program, High Performance Program, Squash Starters Program, and BC Jesters Program. Although Squash BC encourages and recommends facilities implement similar standards for those coaching their programs, they would not fall under our requirements.
