Squash BC’s Annual General Meeting was held on July 6, 2024 and was attended by community members across the province. The AGM included a preview of Squash BC’s Annual Report, our formal AGM Agenda, and a Board Election. We thank all of those who attended!
Squash BC would like to extend a huge thank you to Bruce Matthews for his time as President of the Board and his time as a Director-at-Large (2017-2024). While his presidency may be over, Bruce will still play a role on the Squash BC Board as Past President and will continue to stay involved with the organization.
Squash BC also extends a huge thank you to all our Directors-at-Large for all their hard work this year. Cindy Longley and Colin Brown will be missed as they step down from their positions. A big congrats to Sam Crawford as he steps down from the Squash BC Board and enters into his new role as Director-at-Large for the Squash Canada Board.
After an exciting election during the AGM, Squash BC is pleased to welcome four new Directors: Joel Casey, Chris El-Araj, Iyeba Maclayton, and Stacey Sellars as well as returning Directors Leonard Bruno and Cathy Brown. Leonard will continue to serve on the Board Executive team as VP-Finance and we are excited to welcome Cathy as the incoming President. They join active Directors Diana Chang and Nathan Ozog, our newly appointed VP-Secretary, as the Squash BC Board for the 2024-25 season.
Learn more below about our four new Directors:
Joel Casey has been playing squash for over 35 years. He began playing squash as a junior in the Yukon and represented the territory in the 1991 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, PEI. He currently plays in the Okanagan Squash League (OSL) and previously served as President of the OSL for 9 years. Joel has organized tournaments at both the PSA and amateur and continues to play in Canadian Nationals and BC Provincial tournaments.
Chris El-Araj is passionate about squash and has participated in local leagues, and numerous provincial & national level amateur tournaments. He is also a member of the Squash BC Referee Development Program and has sponsored several tournaments at the local, national, and professional level. Chris is keen to contribute his enthusiasm and business experiences to pursue the Squash BC Strategic Plan.
Iyeba Maclayton has been a dedicated squash enthusiast for over 17 years, beginning her journey in Nigeria. After relocating to Canada, she joined the Vancouver Women’s Squash League and now serves as the Bonsor Division 2 Co-Captain. Iyeba is excited to bring her passion for squash and professional expertise to the Squash BC Board. She is particularly eager to see more new immigrant families start playing the game of squash as a way to help them network, build community, discover their talent, and spread the reach of squash in BC.
Stacey Sellars was born in the Yukon and has lived in Vancouver for 13 years, enjoying the much more favourable weather and vibrant sports and culture scenes. While she is new to squash, she is excited to bring more than a decade of non-profit marketing and brand experience to the Board, to help build the profile of the sport in our province. Stacey is particularly excited about the opportunity to bring more British Columbians into the sport, taking advantage of the growing interest leading into the 2028 Olympics, with a focus of increasing the number of women playing squash, including herself!
