After a weekend of incredible competition and unforgettable moments, the 2024 BC Squash Championships has come to a close. Held at the Nanaimo Squash Club in Nanaimo from April 12 to April 14, squash players from across the province gathered to compete in BC’s final Provincial Championship of the season.
DELGADO & DELIERRE WIN OPEN TITLES
The Open Divisions saw fierce competition, with Giselle Delgado and Shawn Delierre emerging as the champions. For the second year in a row, the Women’s Open Final showcased an exciting rematch between Giselle and Grace Thomas. Giselle secured the Championship title once again, winning in three straight games (11-5, 11-9, 11-4). The Men’s Open Final featured a thrilling match-up between Shawn and Liam Marrison. Shawn won the Championship title in a four-game battle that kept everyone on the edge of their seats (7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9).
TIERED & MASTERS DIVISION RESULTS
But the excitement didn’t stop there – a total of 8 champions were crowned across all divisions. With Masters and Tiered Draws suitable for players of all levels, the event truly had something for everyone! Check out the list of all division final-round matches:
- Men’s 40+: Andrew Lynn def. Ben Thomas (13-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6)
- Men’s 60+: Brian McGaw def. Patrick McDonough (11-4, 11-6, 11-1)
- Women’s Tier: Thea Wilson-Scorgie def. Anika Dhillon (7-11, 14-12, 11-7, 11-7)
- Men’s Tier 1: Lucas Jessa def. Roshan Pathak (8-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8)
- Men’s Tier 2: Joel Friesen def. Tim King (11-8, 14-12, 12-10)
- Men’s Tier 3: Hunter Kennedy def. Kolya Kowalchuk (11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4)

MEMORIES CREATED OFF-COURT
The event wasn’t just an on-court experience! In between thrilling matches, participants were also treated to some fantastic social events. The event kicked off on the Thursday with Community Engagement Programming. Giselle Delgado led women’s programming with 8 participants as well as junior programming. On the Friday, Nanaimo’s Club Pro Josh Struthers, along with several local assistants, led junior programming for 2 elementary schools with 70 kids trying the sport.
Players enjoyed a Player Party on Saturday evening at The Old City Station Pub; everyone was able to relax, socialize and enjoy a great selection of food and drinks. We thank The Old City Station Pub staff for their work throughout the social. Participants also enjoyed Nanaimo Squash Club’s Courtside Bar during the event.
Throughout the weekend, Squash BC ran a 50/50 Draw to raise funds for our Squash Barriers Campaign in support of our Squash in Schools program. This year, Squash BC piloted Squash in Schools and we’re on track to introduce the sport to thousands of students before the end of the school year. The Squash Barriers Campaign aims to keep delivering this program at no charge to schools again in September 2024. The draw raised hundreds of dollars for the campaign and a big congratulations again to Andrew Lynn, who won the prize! Thanks to all that supported!
TRULY A TEAM EFFORT
This unforgettable event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our tournament partners. The Championships were also a showcase of Squash BC’s Referee Development Program as we were able to use the tournament as an assessment opportunity for our amazing Referee team. Thank you to Kiowa, Henny, Sergio, Bruce, Chris, Jack, Margaret, Nathan, Les, and all the player referees for ensuring our event ran with positive sportsmanship and a strong adherence to the rules. A special shout out goes to our Referee Mentor & Assessor Rod McDougall, who was an incredible leader for our referees.
Squash BC would also like to give a special thank you to our host facility the Nanaimo Squash Club, Club Pro Josh Struthers, as well as the club’s amazing staff and the rest of the team who did an incredible job getting the facility ready and supported us throughout the event.
