The 56th Jesters Pacific Northwest (PNW) Junior Squash Championships in Victoria, BC have officially wrapped up, marking another fantastic year for one of the region’s longest-running junior squash events. Originally started by Cedar Hill Squash Club’s Phil Green, the tournament continues to thrive decades later, with this year’s champions adding their names to a list that includes many of Canada’s top players.
The level of play throughout the weekend was impressive. Matches were competitive, fast-paced, and played in great spirit. It was especially encouraging to see athletes focused on playing the ball and demonstrating strong sportsmanship across all divisions.
In addition to the junior play, a key focus of the event once again was referee development on Vancouver Island, and meaningful progress was made. The tournament welcomed referee assessors Dave Howard from Toronto and Simon Bicknell from Vancouver, who completed more than 20 referee assessments and awarded six new signatures to local officials. These signatures help referees advance through Squash Canada’s certification pathway.
On Saturday afternoon, Dave Howard and Les Homme also hosted a two-hour refereeing clinic for community members and players competing in the tournament. Following the clinic, Les Homme earned his Squash Canada Provincial Assessor designation, an exciting step forward for referee development in BC.
Congratulations to the team at Cedar Hill Squash Club, along with supporting clubs and sponsors for hosting such a great event!
