In a landmark celebration of Squash BC’s 50th anniversary, the 2025 BC Squash Championships etched a powerful new milestone into the province’s sporting history. Held at the Evergreen Squash Club, this year’s edition saw an unprecedented 183 athletes compete in the largest player turnout in the history of the event.
This historic week was about more than just competition, it was a full-spectrum celebration of squash in British Columbia. With grassroots programming, referee development sessions, and a new women’s rookie division, the event reflected the strength, depth, and future of the game. From juniors stepping onto the court for the first time to seasoned pros chasing titles, the Championships served as a showcase of Squash BC’s five decades of growth and impact.
MARRISON AND HO WIN OPEN TITLES
The open divisions saw strong competition in both divisions, with Liam Marrison and Wing Kai Gladys Ho emerging as champions. In the Women’s Open draw, Gladys dethroned the two-time defending champion Giselle Delgado in a five-game thriller 3-2 (9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7). With every rally cheered on by a packed gallery, Ho’s tenacity and precision carried her to a hard-fought victory. In the Men’s Open draw, Liam continued his very strong play this season, cruising to the Men’s Title without dropping a single game across 4 matches. In the final, Liam defeated Guillermo Cortes-Ortiz (11-6, 11-7, 11-7) to win the 2025 BC Championships.

Community Spirit Shines Beyond the Glass
The event was more than just the battles on the court. This year’s BC Squash Championships saw many community initiatives coordinated in partnership with the event. Leading up to the Championships, Squash BC was excited to offer Squash in Schools programming at University Hill Elementary School on Monday, April 7, Quilchena Elementary on Wednesday, April 9, and Norquay Elementary on Thursday, April 10, which introduced over 450 students to the sport of squash.
On Friday evening, the Aussie Pie Referee Development Program got together for a Q&A session with national referee David Fishburn, who was brought in from Ontario for the weekend to provide mentorship, training and assessment for referees across the province. During the weekend, referees earned various signatures needed to advance in the Squash Canada referee program.
Squash BC was excited to launch a new style format to help promote our Women in Squash Program with a Women’s Rookie Tournament. The Women’s Rookie tournament was an exciting tournament format with a total of 10 participants playing 5 matches each. All matches were 12-minute straight-play matches, with the player collecting the most points across their 5 matches declaring the title. Congratulations to Women’s Rookie Tournament Champion Alejandra Bayardo who scored a total of 154 points in her 5 matches.
The off-court fun did not stop on Saturday, with the tournament dinner taking place during the Open division semi-finals. Participants were treated with Greek slovaki platters and pasta, which was a big hit throughout the evening.
A tournament-wide 50/50 draw and bar fundraiser added to the excitement throughout the weekend and helped raise an estimated $500 in support of Squash BC’s Building the Future Fund. Congratulations to our big 50/50 winner Sean Peever, who took home $295.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Squash BC President Cathy Brown and our incredible board members, who volunteered their time to sell tickets and engage with the participants.
A True Team Effort: Thank you to our champions and champions behind the scenes
This milestone event would not have been possible without the contributions and generous support of the tournament partners. A huge thanks to R&B Brewing, belairdirect, IMAGEN Promo, Government of British Columbia, and viaSport who all played crucial roles in making this event a resounding success.
The Championships were also showcased by Squash BC’s Aussie Pie Guy Referee Development Program participants, who all contributed to the success of the event. Thank you, Kiowa, Sam, Henny, Maryam, Simon, Jack, and Chris, who all spent many hours around the courts over the weekend officiating many matches. This allowed the event to run smoothly and ensured positive sportsmanship, and adherence to the rules was followed over the weekend. A special thank you goes to our Referee Mentor & Assessor, David Fishburn, who provided tremendous support to our referees in their development.
Squash BC would like to give a special thank you to our host facility, Evergreen Squash Club, Club Pro Thomas Brinkman and Manager Cathy Covernton, as well as the club’s amazing staff and volunteers who assisted throughout the event to ensure the event ran smoothly with the record attendance. Squash BC would also like to thank the Hollyburn Country Club and Club Pro Ryan Picken for stepping up and providing us with courts throughout the day on Saturday to ensure all participants received 3 matches.
This event was a vibrant reflection of the community spirit and collaboration that have powered our sport for the past 50 years. Thank you to all the participants and spectators who brought such incredible energy and enthusiasm to the weekend; it’s moments like these that define our legacy. Congratulations to all the champions. We look forward to wrapping up our yearlong 50th anniversary celebrations in style when we return to the courts this fall.
