Squash BC is saddened by the passing of Duncan “Harry” Bell-Irving Q.C., a true pioneer and champion of our sport. Harry’s contributions to squash in British Columbia were immense; he won the BC Men’s Squash Championship title twice and proudly represented Canada on the international stage. Beyond his personal achievements, he played a pivotal role in shaping the squash community, helping to establish the Vancouver Racquets Club and bringing the esteemed Jesters Club to Canada, an organization that continues to support and promote the game today.

Harry embodied the spirit of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and dedication both on and off the court. His passion for the game, warm hospitality, and commitment to growing the sport have left a lasting impact on squash in BC and beyond.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Harry’s family and friends. His legacy will live on in the courts he helped shape, the community he nurtured, and the countless players he inspired.

A Note From the BC Jesters:

We are sad to report the passing of Harry Bell-Irving, an icon in the annals of BC Squash. Harry was a pioneer in the development of squash in Vancouver and in establishing the game at the old Vancouver Racquets Club as well as at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club.

Harry was one of the early Canadian Jesters (1956) and was instrumental in developing the BC Jesters nest in Vancouver. He was elected to Honorary Life Membership of the Canadian Jesters in 2007 in recognition of his services to the game of squash. With his passing, the BC legal profession, the City of Vancouver and the Canadian and BC Jesters have lost a legend. Harry was a prominent lawyer, an outstanding raconteur and a thoroughly decent fellow. More than anything else, he was instrumental in establishing the game of squash in British Columbia.
