During this past March Break, squash courts across BC came alive with energy, enthusiasm, and new faces as a series of camps and events welcomed junior players of all levels. From introductory sessions to high-performance training, these programs showcased the sport in fun and engaging ways. With outstanding support from coaches, clubs, and volunteers, the camps not only helped players improve their skills but also fostered a deeper love for the game. Here’s a look at three standout events that made a big impact this March.

Cedar Hill Hosts Junior Girls Event

For a second year in a row, Cedar Hill Squash Club hosted a Junior Girls Squash Starters Event organized by Coach Phil Green. Enjoy this camp recap  written by Coach Phil!

“Thank you once again for Squash BC’s support of our Starter Event for girls on March 28. This was our second year of hosting this 6 hour event and it was well attended with 29 of the 32 available spots filled.

The playing format was revamped this year in an effort to provide more court time for everyone. At the outset the girls organized themselves into two skill levels. Each group was then broken down into groups of four players for three rounds of Queen of the Court. The results of those games were used to seed players into final draws of eight. At this stage, each player had three more timed matches. It was certainly more challenging to organize, but the increased level of activity was worthwhile. If there is interest, I have developed a template I would be happy to share.

We appreciated the Squash BC bags and frisbees! We put together some additional treats for the players and they were all well received. Thank you to Cedar Hill Squash Club for hosting us! And finally, a big thank-you to volunteers Sandi Carson and Charlene Parker who assisted during the day!”

Sunshine Squash Club Spring Break Camp

Weihan and the Sunshine Squash Club ran a Spring Break Camp on  March 22nd and 23rd, welcoming over 20 enthusiastic participants on the first day and 15 on the second.

On March 22nd, they introduced the basics of squash through engaging drills and fun activities, giving participants a chance to learn proper technique and get a feel for the sport. The following day, they hosted a mini-tournament, where players had the opportunity to put their new skills to the test in a friendly, supportive environment.

“Overall, we felt that we invited and showcased squash to lots of new faces who haven’t seen what squash is like to play, and we hope that they will pick up this interest and continue to improve themselves in the future.” Weihan

Squash BC High Performance Camp

Squash BC was excited to host a High Performance Program spring break camp for the targeted 2027 Canada Winter Games. A total of 28 Athletes who are eligible for the 2027 CWG were invited based on their provincial/national ranking and recent tournament results. The camp was led by Canada’s number 1 ranked women’s player Hollie Naughton and Squash BC Provincial Coach Richard Yendell. During the four-day camp, players received training on and off the court, which included sport psychology and mental health training led by Luca Ferretti.

Squash BC would like to thank Jericho Tennis Club for hosting the High Performance camp, along with Shawn Delierre who assisted with some coaching during the camp.
