Celebrating 50 Years of Squash BC
From its humble beginnings to becoming a beloved pastime and competitive pursuit, squash has evolved significantly over the past five decades in this vibrant province, guided by principles of community, growth, and the trailblazers who paved the way. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Squash BC, it’s a moment to reflect on the journey of squash, recognize its impact on local communities, and envision its bright future.
A Historical Perspective
Squash was introduced to British Columbia as early as the 1890s, primarily in urban centers like Vancouver and Victoria. Initially, the sport attracted a niche audience, but its appeal quickly grew. The Jesters were a strong influence in bringing squash to the province. Community centres and fitness clubs were home to the first squash courts, providing access for recreational players and serious athletes alike.
In 1974, the establishment of Squash BC, formerly the B.C. Squash Racquets Association, created a centralized body that could promote squash across the province, organize tournaments, create structured pathways for players of all levels, support existing clubs and advocate for the sport. In the early 2010s, the Coastal Squash Urban Enrichment Program was a pillar in offering the opportunity to underserved youth to unleash their athletic and academic potential.
Celebrating Community:
Community has always been at the heart of squash in BC. Local clubs and leagues have fostered a welcoming environment, making it easy for players of all ages and skill levels to participate. Programs such as Squash In Schools, Women’s Squash Week, the Junior Pathway, the BC Jesters Post Secondary Program and more have been instrumental in introducing the sport to new players, breaking down barriers and ensuring that squash is accessible to everyone.
The contributions of volunteers cannot be overlooked: from organizing events to serving as ambassadors, countless individuals tirelessly dedicate their time and energy to building and supporting a vibrant squash community.
Celebrating Growth
With over thirty clubs and thousands of active players, today, squash in British Columbia is thriving. Squash BC continues to spearhead initiatives aimed at enhancing player development and promoting inclusivity.
The province has also been host to several national and international tournaments, showcasing local talent and attracting players from around the world! In June 2022, BC hosted the Oxford Properties Canadian Squash Championships, with the Power Court set up in downtown Vancouver, at the Olympic Cauldron—Canada’s first ever outdoor squash event.
Honoring Trailblazers
As we look to the future, it’s important to honor those who have been trailblazers in the sport—those who have contributed their time, energy and resources to build squash in BC and allow it to be what it is today. These individuals have played immense roles in promoting squash through coaching, mentorship, and leadership alongside Squash BC.
Whether it’s engaging more youth and women, coaching, tournament organization, player development, community engagement or sponsorship, Squash BC is fortunate to have the support of the squash community around it. Stay tuned for our Squash BC Community Awards!
