BC Athletes Dominate 2023 Canadian Junior Closed Championships

What a remarkable week for BC athletes at the 2023 Canadian Junior Closed Squash Championships! Hosted by Club Atwater in Montreal, Quebec, our young athletes made a powerful statement on the courts, winning gold in nine out of ten divisions. We couldn’t be prouder of their skill, determination, and sportsmanship. Read on for a recap of key results from the event.

Under 11

Kicking off the finals action, Marcelo Toriz (BC) outperformed Chase Facchin 8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8 to secure the championship title in the Boys U11 division, setting the tone for the rest of the day. On the girls side, it was an all-BC final for the U11 division. Mabelle Sy and Annie Wang (both BC) showcased an incredible level of skill far beyond their years. Mabelle emerged victorious 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7, but both girls represented Squash BC with excellence.

Under 13

The Girls U13 division saw Veera Dhaliwal (BC) triumph over Elishka Roux in straight games 11-5, 11-9, 11-6, while BC’s Lily Fan secured the Bronze. In the Boys U13 division, Joseph Suh (BC) proved his mettle against Ibrahim Hosny 11-2, 11-5, 11-5, winning the title.

Under 15

Yusuf Matti-Alvarez (BC) made an incredible comeback in the Boys U15 final 9-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 11-1, overpowering Calder Murray to clinch the championship. In the Girls U15 division, Joelle Kim (BC) demonstrated exceptional skill to defeat Maria Sabogal 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-3, cementing her spot as the champion.

Under 17

Spring Ma (BC) put on a show of skill and strategy in the Girls U17 final against Keira Hickox 11-4, 11-7, 11-2, claiming the title. We also want to commend Sarah Aki (BC) for winning the Bronze in this division.

Under 19

The Boys U19 division witnessed Jacob Lin (BC) assert his dominance over Devon Li 11-6, 11-4, 11-8, in his championship-winning performance. Rounding out the competition, the Girls U19 final was another all-BC battle. Ocean Ma triumphed over Maria Min 11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 8-11, 11-5 in a nail-biting game of 5.

Squash BC extends a HUGE thank you to all our BC parents, coaches, and players who travelled to the event. You all contributed to this result. It is incredible to have such a dedicated community behind our athletes.

We also want to recognize and thank Squash Canada, Club Atwater, and all the event organizers, volunteers, and officials who worked tirelessly to make this championship a resounding success.

Finally, congratulations to all 48 of our athletes who competed in this event. Your performance has once again demonstrated that BC is a force to be reckoned with on the national stage.
